"We didn't ask to be extraordinary. We just refused to disappear."

— The Sikh Canadian Experience

Reflection — Part 5 of the Project

"What can Canadians today learn from the struggles and resilience of Sikh communities in Canada?"

What stands out most about Sikh Canadian history isn't the discrimination — it's what came after. People who were refused the right to vote still enlisted to defend the country that denied them. Families who were turned away at the harbour came back anyway, planted roots, and built communities that outlasted the laws meant to stop them.

That tells us something important: resilience isn't just surviving hard times. It's insisting on your dignity when the system says you don't deserve it. It's building a gurdwara in a town where you're not fully welcome, because your community needs somewhere to belong.

For Canadians today, the lesson might be this — the version of Canada we're proud of wasn't handed to anyone. It was argued for, marched for, and sometimes died for, by people who had every reason to give up and didn't. That's worth knowing. That's worth remembering.
